You can´t raise capital if you don´t know how to value what´s
for sale. A common deal killer results when the entrepreneur
attempts to raise capital without a sense of the company´s
valuation. This is an especially difficult process for startups.
The assets of startup firms are primarily intangible, including technology, business relationships, intellectual property and other assets.
However, many startup firms encounter strategic roadblocks due to incomplete information about their intangible assets.
This presentation will summarize how to identify and estimate value of intangible assets for startup firms.
In addition, this presentation will describe why identifying and valuing intangible assets can assist startup firms with a variety of
strategic decisions and important tasks, including, but not limited to:
Raising financial capital;
Negotiating contracts with employees, vendors and other entities;
Determining whether to continue or abandon product development;
Assessing tax strategies associated with entry into foreign markets;
Negotiating strategic alliances, joint ventures, and/or licensing arrangements; and
Identifying missing but necessary complementary assets.
A case study demonstrates how identifying and estimating value helps management decide on the future direction of a software startup firm facing adverse business conditions.
